"Blade Runnerâ Inspiration, Philip K. Dickâs âDo Androids Dream Of Electric Sheepâ Headed To Comics
The Philip K. Dick story âDo Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?,â which served as the inspiration for the 1982 science-fiction film âBlade Runner,â will be adapted into a 24-issue comic book series by publisher Boom Studios.
Announced earlier today, the series will adapt the award-winning story by âmixing all new panel-to-panel continuity with the actual text from the novel.â Artist Steven Dupre (âWolfâ) will provide interior art for the series, and you can expect to see the first issue hit shelves in June. âTransmetropolitanâ and âFreakAngelsâ writer Warren Ellis â no stranger to celebrated science-fiction storytelling â will provide âbackmatterâ in each issue.
Boom also provided a trio of cover images from the upcoming series.
For those not familiar with the story (or the film it spawned), Boom provided the following synopsis of the project:
ââDo Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?â takes place in a world where San Francisco lies under a cloud of radioactive dust. The World War has killed millions, driving entire species to extinction and sending mankind off-planet. Those who remained coveted any living creature, and for people who couldnât afford one, companies built incredibly realistic fakes: horses, birds, cats, sheep⌠even humans. Rick Deckard is an officially sanctioned bounty hunter tasked to find six rogue androids â theyâre machines, that not only look, sound, and think like humans, but are clever, and most of all, dangerous just like humans.â
Is your interest piqued? Think Philip K. Dickâs tale will translate well to comics? What other science-fiction classics should get the comics treatment?

Charming chap Chip Mosher has provided a preview PDF of Boom! Studiosâ Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? #1, available in finer comic shops this Wednesday, and Iâm gonna review it! As an opening page states, âThis series is the complete text of Philip K. Dickâs Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, presented in graphic form.â So how does the intriguing experiment of comic book translation fare?

DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP? #1
by Chad Nevett
REVIEW:
âStill, you wouldnât want to see my novel on the screen because it is full of people conversing, plus the personal problems of the protagonist. These matters donât translate to the screen. And why translate them, since a novel is a story in words, whereas a movie is an event that moves?â Philip K. Dick wrote that in 1981, discussing his novel âDo Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?â and the film adaptation âBlade Runner,â which merely used Dickâs novel as a jumping off point for a related-yet-entirely-different tale.
