This book is among the first I read by PKD. It certainly kept my attention. Well, it's caught the attention of another. Interesting note too, I was just thinking about this story last night. Just moments ago, I stumbled upon the following article.
Gilliam Intrigued by Philip K. Dick Novel
Has met with author’s daughter about filming it
Along with finally filming The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, Terry Gilliam might helm an adaptation of Philip K. Dick. That’s big news, and not altogether undeserved, given that Gilliam himself admits he’s been ripping the sci-fi author off for years.
The Dick novel that has piqued the director’s interest is "The World Jones Made", which takes place on a world torn apart by ideological war. Following a great disaster, people live their lives according to relativism, or the moral and ethical philosophy that everyone is free to believe whatever they wish, so long as they don’t make anyone else try and follow that principle.
However, the established order is challenged by Floyd Jones, whose predictions about the future prove correct. Hermaphrodite mutants and alien life forms abound, but the novel is also known for exploring notions of predestination and free will.
Gilliam, in a video interview with /Film, said he views "The World Jones Made" as dealing with Christian and Islamic fundamentalism in the modern world. In recent weeks, it was reported the director spoke with Dick’s daughter, ostensibly about mounting the adaptation; Gilliam admitted he met with Isa Dick Hackett at Comic-Con International, but the project remains in the conversation stage.
Gilliam said he wouldn’t mind making a movie in which Dick gets credit for source material, given how he has borrowed from the author’s books for his own films. The meeting was set up by Tony Grisoni, who wrote the screenplays for Gilliam’s Tideland and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and is reportedly planning a biopic about the author, who would be played by Paul Giamatti.
Of course, any film version of either "The World Jones Made" or "Ubik" — the two Dick works Gilliam said intrigue him the most — would come with high expectations.
"I feel with Philip K. Dick, there’s a lot of pressure on it," Gilliam said.
