Blade Runner?
I must first stress that, if it isn't obvious, I am an absolutely dedicated, hardcore fan of Blade Runner. With that said (written)...I wish to vent on the topic of the "name" Blade Runner. Although it's a "cool sounding" name...it really doesn't fit the movie...at all. As we know: "Hampton Fancher found a cinema treatment by William S. Burroughs for Alan E. Nourse's novel The Bladerunner (1974), entitled Blade Runner (a movie). Ridley Scott liked the name so Michael Deeley obtained the rights to the titles." "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" is a tad long for a title. Besides, the "sheep" concept was left out of the movie. Other proposed names, "Android", "Mechanismo", and "Dangerous Days" would have been more appropriate. How would you make sense of "Blade Runner"? The androids weren't called or referred to as "Blades". They were "Replicants". No one carried "blades". In the book the Deckard character was a Bounty Hunter. In the movie a policeman. A policeman of the "Blade Runner Unit". What would I title this movie? I couldn't say. During the making verses the finished product return very different results. During the making process..."Replicant" perhaps? Or one of the three titles mentioned above sound like good candidates. After the fact? Perhaps..."Through the Eyes", or "Minds Eye"? Nope. Blade Runner it is. As dissociative to the storyline as it is...it is appropriate. After all, which were more "human"...the Replicants or the human beings?
